SAFETY AROUND WATER
The Safety Around Water program is offered FREE to youth in our community. This Y driven program helps prevent drowning. Three children die every day as a result of drowning. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4. It is the second leading cause of death for children ages 5 to 14. As an organization dedicated to creating safe spaces for all, the Y has an opportunity to make a difference. Research has shown that participation in formal swimming instruction can prevent drowning.
This year, the Naugatuck YMCA received funding from the Ion Bank Foundation to support the YMCA national program Safety Around Water and Swim Scholarship program.
The Safety Around Water program teaches children up to age 12 how to be safe around water. This program is offered FREE to youth in the community. The skills they develop from the Safety Around Water program will help youth learn how to be safe around bodies of water. These skills include waterfront safety, boating safety, backyard pool safety, and so much more. After completing the Safety Around Water program the children are prepared to transition into swim lessons to continue their learning.
The Swim Scholarship will assist in covering the cost of these lessons for families in need of assistance.
